Bagatelle Safer Routes to School Project: Fountain Lane Traffic Restriction Trial
The Bagatelle project aims to make it safer for children and families to travel to school in the Le Mont Millais and Bagatelle Road area. By enhancing walking, cycling, and bus access, we’re creating a safer environment for all.
Fountain Lane Traffic Restriction Trial – Starting April 2025
We are introducing a 12-month trial to restrict traffic on Fountain Lane, transforming it into a pedestrian and cycle-friendly zone. This change will ensure a safer journey for children and families heading to local schools and provide a peaceful space for parishioners.
Key Details:
- Trial Duration: April 2025 – April 2026, starting during the Easter school holidays.
- Traffic Management: Traffic bollards (subject to residential support) will create a safe, traffic-free zone for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Access: Residents, businesses, and service providers will maintain access from Claremont Road or Belvedere Hill. No through traffic will be allowed.
This trial is a joint initiative between the DfI Minister, who is leading the project, and the Parish of St. Saviour, which administers the road. We’re committed to assessing its impact and gathering valuable feedback throughout.
Monitoring and Feedback
To measure the impact, we will:
- Install traffic counters at Fountain Lane, James Road/Mont Pinel and Claremont Road junction.
- Collect feedback from residents and users
- Conduct a full consultation process
By the end of the trial in April 2026, we will evaluate the results and determine whether the improvements will be permanent. We will also consider withdrawing the trial should there be a significant impact on congestion levels in Mont Millais.
Kevin Lewis, Connétable of St. Saviour:
“This trial is about creating safer, more accessible routes for everyone—especially children—by reducing the traffic that currently makes Fountain Lane a dangerous ‘rat-run’, especially at the top end. We’re empowering the local community, supporting sustainable travel, and improving the quality of life for residents who have long been frustrated by the daily congestion and road safety. With their support, we align with Jersey’s wider vision for safer school routes and more connected neighbourhoods.”
