Traffic and Safety Improvements near St. Michael’s School – NEW ZEBRA CROSSING

We are pleased to announce that, following consultation with St. Michael’s School, the Connétable and Roads Committee of St Saviour are moving forward with a key initiative designed to enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians, especially students commuting to and from the school.

New Zebra Crossing Installation

A new zebra crossing is proposed on La Rue de la Houguette, strategically positioned between the main pedestrian entrance to the school site and the school car park.

The objective of this scheme is to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility when crossing to and from the school, particularly during busy school drop-off and pick-up times.

Traffic Flow Modification under Article 68

In addition to the proposed zebra crossing, and in support of St Michael’s School, we are proposing a modification to the traffic flow in the area. Specifically, La Rue de la Houguette will transition from a one-way to a two-way system, starting at the exit of the school car park and extending to Rue des Friquettes. However, the section of La Rue de la Houguette leading towards Prince’s Tower Road will remain one-way. This change aims to enhance traffic circulation and improve overall safety around the school.

Timeline and Implementation

These changes are scheduled for implementation in February 2025, aligning with the school’s half-term break to minimize disruption. Contractors will be appointed and all necessary signage and supporting measures will be installed in advance of the changes. The school will be formally notified of these developments to ensure they are fully prepared.

On behalf of the Headmaster and Governors:  “St. Michael’s School is delighted to be working with the Parish of St Saviour to improve safety for our pupils, staff, and parents. The installation of a zebra crossing and changes to traffic flow will make a significant difference, ensuring safer journeys to and from school.

Our staff and pupils are excited to see these improvements take effect, and we appreciate the Parish’s efforts in prioritising school safety.”

We remain committed to improving road safety and accessibility for all parishioners and sincerely appreciate your continued support in these efforts. Updates on the progress of these changes will be shared as they develop.
