Your rubbish collection

Your general rubbish will be collected once a week

You will need your own wheelie or regular bin to leave outside your home for collection.

You can purchase bins from several retailers across the Island, we recommend wheelie bins as these are much safer for the refuse collectors to empty.

Items we won’t collect

Please note that there are specific items we cannot accept for general rubbish collection, including: 

• furniture
• mattresses
• large household appliances
• televisions and electrical goods
• solvent-based paints and chemicals
• Building materials

Additionally, the following items should not be placed in your rubbish bin: 

• glass – use the Parish glass collection
• lightbulbs
• batteries
• electrical/electronic goods

The Parish collects household glass once a month for recycling. Please refer to the recycling calendar below to find the scheduled collection dates of your area.

You will need your own clearly labelled glass bin; this must be a wheelie bin as these are much safer for the glass collectors to empty. These can be provided by the Parish FREE of charge. Please get in touch with us on 735864 or [email protected] if you would like a glass bin.

Glass can only be recycled if it’s free from all other materials, including plastic bags. Before recycling your glass bottles and jars, you should:

• rinse them
• remove corks, caps or lids
• remove plastic labels (paper labels can be left on)
• You can recycle broken glass bottles and jars.

We cannot collect lightbulbs, flat glass such as mirrors, windows and sheet glass, electronic/electrical goods and ceramics such as plates and cups. These items can be taken to the Household Reuse and Recycling Centre at La Collette.

Do not throw away glass in your general rubbish bin as it cannot be processed at the Energy Recovery Facility. Glass will melt during the incineration process, cool and then set. It must be removed manually and can cause severe mechanical problems.

Where does your glass go?

Your glass is taken to the recycling contractor at La Collette. Here it can made into an aggregate material and some is sent to the UK for processing at a glass recycling facility.

Kerbside recycling will be collected from your doorstep twice monthly by our dedicated recycling team, please make sure your rubbish and recycling is out before 6am, on the day of your collection.

Your Parish recycling collection (2-bag system)

Since its inception in October 2019, the Parish of St Saviour has been proud to provide a household recycling collection service, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Our service encompasses the collection of various recyclable materials, including paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, and household metal packaging.  

 The Parish provides householders with two recycling bags:

• Clear Bags: will be used for the recycling of steel tins, aluminium cans, and plastic bottles. We kindly request that you utilise the clear bags for these specific recyclables. 
• Blue Bags: will be designated for the recycling of light card, paper, magazines, and envelopes. Please ensure that these materials are placed in blue bags for collection

Recycling bags can be collected from the Parish Hall during opening hours (Mon – Fr 8:45am – 3:45pm)

We understand that these collection times may not be convenient for all residents. In such cases, we kindly request that you contact our customer services team on 735864 or [email protected] and provide either your rate payer reference number, or name and residential address. Our dedicated waste and recycling teams will then arrange for bags to be delivered directly to your property.

Please put your recycling bags out the night before your collection day as our recycling team start collections early.

If you would like to recycle in between collections, please bring your recycling bags to the Recycling Centre at the Parish Depot in Rue de Pres trading estate.

BLUE BAG – PAPER & CARD

It’s essential to be mindful of what you can and cannot recycle to ensure the effectiveness of our recycling program. Here’s a breakdown of what you can and cannot recycle:

Shredded paper: We do not collect shredded paper, but it can be taken to Abbey Waste in Rue de Pres trading estate for recycling.

Scrunch test: If you are unsure if wrapping paper or a food wrapper can be recycled, do the scrunch test:  Scrunch the wrapper in your hand – if it springs back open put it in your rubbish bin as we cannot recycle it.

Please ensure the paper and card are clean & dry. 

CLEAR BAG – CLEAN METAL & PLASTICS

It’s essential to be mindful of what you can and cannot recycle to ensure the effectiveness of our recycling program. Please rinse and dry cans, tins, bottles, and trays. Here’s a breakdown of what you can and cannot recycle:

What happens if you put the wrong items in your bin? 

Everyone makes mistakes, and we understand that, but it is vital that we only collect the correct items in the clear bag. If we fail to do this, our processing partner cannot manage it, which may damage other items, making them unrecyclable and ultimately costing us more money.

We adopt a proactive approach to reducing incorrect items in our scheme [contamination], using stickers on BAGS. Our collection crews may refuse to accept and will tag bags if they contain wrong items. Bags will not be collected if they are not used correctly. This policy is applied throughout the Parish and safeguards all residents who do their part.

If you are unsure if something can be recycled, please leave it out and contact us.

Parish of St Saviour 

Your recycling is delivered to Abbey Waste, a company providing recycling services based in the parish. Abbey Waste receive and export recycling for the Government of Jersey and you can be confident that all of the parish’s recycling will be recycled.

Paper and cardboard are sent to a recycler in the UK. They are used to make recycled card products such as packaging and the covers for hard back books.

Bottles are sent to a UK recycling plant where they are cut into small pieces and melted down to create recycled plastic. They will be used to make a range of products made from recycled plastic such as garden furniture and PVC window frames.

Household metal packaging such as food and drink cans are sent to a recycler where they are separated into aluminium and steel. The metals are sent to the UK to be melted down and processed to create new cans and other metal goods.

The Parish recycling bags are made from recycled material and are also recyclable.  We can only recycle the bags if they are clean so please make sure the items you recycle are clean and empty.

In our ongoing effort to promote responsible waste management, it is crucial to highlight the significance of recycling and waste reduction practices. These actions not only contribute to cost savings, but also have a far-reaching positive impact on the environment. By adhering to the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, we collectively play a role in conserving valuable resources and minimizing our carbon footprint.

Recycling is a key component of sustainable waste management. It involves the conversion of used materials into new products, which conserves energy, reduces water consumption, and helps preserve finite resources on a global scale. While recycling is undeniably important, an even more effective approach is to minimize waste generation from the outset. Each one of us can make a meaningful contribution through various means:

• Smart Purchasing: Making informed and eco-conscious choices when shopping can significantly reduce waste. Consider buying only what you need, opting for products with minimal packaging, and choosing items with a longer lifespan.
•  Reuse and Donation: Extend the life of products by reusing them whenever possible. Donating gently used items to charities or local organisations ensures that they continue to serve a purpose, reducing overall waste.
• Repair and Maintenance: Repairing items instead of discarding them is an eco-friendly practice. It not only saves money, but also minimizes waste by keeping goods in circulation.
• Upcycling: Transforming old or discarded items into new and creative pieces is a fun way to reduce waste. Upcycling gives a second life to objects that would otherwise end up in landfills.

From having damaged belongings repaired to donating clothing to charitable organisations, these actions collectively contribute to waste reduction. We all share the responsibility for the management of our waste and belongings we no longer need. Your participation in these efforts is greatly appreciated as we work together to enhance recycling and minimize waste in St Saviour.

Our refuse and recycling collections are monitored and analysed on a monthly basis in order to measure and evaluate our performance, set targets and report.

Our data is also used to check that we are meeting the requirements of the Government of Jersey and helping to achieve the Island’s recycling targets.
