JERSEY ROYAL potato growing competition for OCCUPATION VIPs

All Occupation VIPs are invited by the Parish Connétables to take part in the 2025 Jersey Royal potato growing competition as part of the Liberation 80 events.

The competition is again being organised by the Genuine Jersey Products Association.

The Occupation VIP class was introduced in 2022 as the Parish Connétables recognised that senior parishioners had missed out on celebrating Liberation Day in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus restrictions.

Mike Jackson, Chairman of the Comité des Connétables said – QUOTE

The annual Jersey Royal potato growing competition challenges various groups, including the Connétables, to grow the heaviest crop and greatest number of Jersey Royal new potatoes using a ‘growing kit’.

The Parish Connétables are delighted that, as part of our Liberation 80 – 2025 events, Genuine Jersey are offering a class for our Occupation VIPs as part of the Jersey Royal potato growing competition.

Understandably, the number of entrants has declined since it was first introduced in 2022 and the Connétables have, regrettably, decided this will be the final year an ‘Occupation VIP’ class is offered.

We hope many Occupation VIPs will participate and ask that they register with their Parish by Friday 24 January 2025.

An ‘Occupation VIP’ is a person who was either resident in Jersey during the Occupation, evacuated, deported or who served in the forces at that time.

Anyone born on or before 9 May 1945 who meets one of these criteria and who wishes to take part should contact their Parish by Friday 24 January 2025 to register to take part.

The Genuine Jersey, Jersey Royal potato growing kits will be distributed in early February 2025 and the weigh-in will be on Friday 16 May 2025.
