History

The Parish of St Saviour has one churchyard and one cemetery within the Parish.

The Parish Church of St Saviour dates from the second half of the 11th Century and is one of the largest and most beautifully situated of the island churches. The Church and the Churchyard are saturated in the history of Jersey, with veterans of the Battles of Waterloo and Trafalgar buried here.

There are also members of French families, and refugees fled to Jersey and were buried here after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685, who led the suppression of the Reformed Church in France and forced Protestants into exile or hiding.

Most famously, Lillie Langtry, daughter of a former Rector of St Saviour’s, is also buried in our churchyard.

Today, St Saviour’s remains a place of welcome and worship with it’s faithful congregation gathering to worship at the times shown below. Special services take place regularly, and we have a strong choral tradition, music being an essential part of our worship.

Management of Churchyard & Cemeteries

Churchyards have for centuries been used as the place of burial for the dead of the Parish. Burial, monuments and exhumation are, along with all other matters relating to churchyards, regulated by law.

The Minister (Rector of the Parish) and others responsible for the care of churchyards and cemeteries, therefore, need to know the regulations and practices in this area, in particular, to guide the bereaved.

Churchyard, Cemetery regulations & Safety

The bereaved must follow the Parish of St Saviour churchyard regulations agreed by the Ecclesiastical Assembly.

Memorials can only be introduced in line with the regulations. That means that the size, materials and wording of any memorial have to be within the parameters of the regulations.

Churchyard and Cemetery Regulations (Rules)

These regulations, including any subsequent amendments, apply to the cemetery located within the Parish of St. Saviour’s churchyard and cemetery, which is managed by the Rector on behalf of the Parish of St Saviour. All burial permits and rights issued after the announcement of these regulations will be subject to these regulations, and any future amendments made to them.

At a Meeting of the Ecclesiastical Assembly held in the Parish Hall on the 17th May 1990, it was agreed that the following Regulations, recommended by the Parochial Committee, be adopted and that the Parochial Committee be empowered to revise the charges as and when necessary. At a Meeting of the Ecclesiastical Assembly held in the Parish Hall in May  2019, it was agreed that the burial charges are to be reviewed in line with the Jersey Retail Price Index (JRPI) on a Annual basis  and that the Parochial Committee be empowered to revise the charges as and when necessary, giving one month’s written notice to the funeral directors and monumental masons.

Please see below for details of the Cemetery regulations and burial charges.
